Kerouac Series
Limited Edition Book Cover Set
The objective of the project was to create a series of book covers to be sold as a limited edition collection. This consists of a book cover for Jack Keroauc's non-fiction novels, On The Road, Visions of Cody and The Subterraneans. This concept is based on losing track of time. Keroauc's writings connect to the values of the beat movement like, adventure, unplanned excursions, and spontaneity. Many beat writers introduced a new lifestyle to the world which was often rejected during the post war era. Kerouac's own experience about being on the road, and constantly on the move allow the readers to enter a new dimension. By rejecting this concept of time, Kerouac is able to live in the moment and forget about what the future holds for him. An unplanned lifestyle was prominent for many beat artists, which also reflect the style of writing and music they produced.
The spiral elements visually depict a constant state of movement. This can also be interpreted as the new world the beat movement had to offer to the future. The three body parts that are shown on each cover relate to the specifics of each story. On the road is shown with a watch to represent the uncertainty of time. Visions of Cody are shown with mouths to represent the dialog in the novel and the influential relationship Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassidy have on each other. The Subterraneans is shown with ears to represent the theme of music, poetry, and other beat writers in this novel.
